William F. Scott ’48 died July 5, 2018, in Peabody, Massachusetts. Bill was in the ROTC at Dartmouth and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He played football and was an All-American lacrosse player for Tommy Dent in 1947 and 1948.
Ernest W. Marshall ’48 died June 15, 2017, at Woodlands Memory Center in Rockland, Maine, where he had resided for the past seven years. At Dartmouth he was a member of Alpha Theta/Theta Chi and the Navy V-12 program.
Charles W. Major ’48 died August 1, 2018, in Bangor, Maine, surrounded by family. He enlisted in the Navy at age 17, was part of the V-12 program at Dartmouth, and was commissioned at age19 from Notre Dame Midshipmen School.
Sabert Basescu ’48 died on May 26 in New York City where he’d spent his career. He completed his Dartmouth education after serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then took his Ph.D.
John H. Parks ’48 died on December 13, 2017, on his farm in Waco, Kentucky, surrounded by family and friends.
Robert E. Mohrbacher ’48, formerly of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, died January 10 at the Cumberland Crossing University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospital. Bob was born on December 15, 1926, in Marion Township, Pennsylvania.
James J. McLaughlin ’48 died on August 9, 2017, at his home in East Hampton, New York, with his wife, Annelie, at his side. He had Parkinson’s disease for more than 20 years.
Marvin F. Axelrod ’48, most recently of Dedham, Massachusetts, died on November 2, 2017. Marv graduated from Boston Latin School and then Dartmouth, where he was a member of the DOC, Marching Band and Pi Lambda Phi.
Arthur F. Niederbuhl ’48, formerly of Bloomingdale, New York, died January 10. Born in Brooklyn on October 21, 1925, he was the son of Arthur and Clara Niederbuhl.
Sanford F. Smith ’48 died at his home on October 28, 2017, after a period of failing health. Sandy graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in New York and Dartmouth, where he was in the Navy V-12 program.
Walter A. Friend Jr. ’48 died on April 29, 2017, at his home in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Walt was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts, and attended high school at Choate in Wallingford, Connecticut.
Jerold F. Lucey ’48 died on December 10, 2017, in Sarasota, Florida. He served in the U.S. Navy, graduated from Dartmouth, where he was in the Navy V-12 program, and New York University medical school.
David I. Barr ’48, who was a resident of Diakon Village in Robinwood, Maryland, died on September 6, 2017, in Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.

John Francis McKeon ’48 died on February 24, 2010 at Lake Forest, Illinois. He entered Dartmouth in the Navy V-12 program in 1943, saw active duty elsewhere, and returned to campus to complete his undergraduate and M.C.S.
Robert Hilliard Sherman ’48 died at Hartford (Connecticut) Hospital on May 2, 2009. He came to Dartmouth from Fall River, Massachusetts, to enter the Marine V-12 unit. On campus he double majored in economics and history.
Warren Dixon Taylor ’48 died in Wesley Chapel, Florida, on April 17. He came to Dartmouth in 1944 from King School at the age of 16 and spent a year in the Navy before returning for his degree in history.
