John J. Turner ’48

John J. Turner ’48, who was living in Vienna, Ohio, died on August 28, 2017, in the Northside Medical Center. Jake was born and brought up in Youngstown, Ohio. Following two years of service in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he returned to Dartmouth, where he was a Medical School graduate and a member of Dragon and Tabard/Sigma Chi. He took his M.D. at Harvard Medical School. While studying pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital he met and married Carolyn and went on to an internship at Boston City Hospital. Following a fellowship in general thoracic surgery at the Mayo Clinic, he returned to Youngstown to open his practice. He later did extensive training at the Cleveland Clinic in cardiovascular surgery. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Chest Physicians, Mahoning County Medical Society, American Medical Association and an associate professor of thoracic surgery at Northeast Ohio College of Medicine. He was considered a pioneer in his field and the recipient of numerous honors and awards. He was widely published in medical journals and spoke extensively on treatment protocols for cancer of the lung. He maintained his practice for 50 years and continued to teach and mentor surgical residents after his retirement. Jake had many personal interests, including spending summers at his Cape Cod, Massachusetts, home, and sailing with his family on the East Coast and Bermuda. He liked flying and got his pilot’s license at age 77. He is survived by Carolyn, their eight children, 18 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
