Sanford F. Smith ’48

Sanford F. Smith ’48 died at his home on October 28, 2017, after a period of failing health. Sandy graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in New York and Dartmouth, where he was in the Navy V-12 program. He served in the Navy as a decoder of Russian mathematics, and went on to complete his dissertation in that field in 1967 and received his Ph.D. in mathematics. He was a professor in the mathematics genealogy department at Brown University. He was the oldest of three children, and is survived by his brother John and was predeceased by his sister Margaret.
