Donald Francis Hansen ’48

Donald Francis Hansen ’48 of Needham, Massachusetts, died on November 16, 2013. He was born and raised in Maynard, Massachusetts. He graduated from Maynard High School and was enrolled in the U.S. Navy V-12 program at Dartmouth. He served as an ensign on the USS New York until 1946, when he returned to Dartmouth, where he was a member of Tabard/Sigma Chi and graduated in 1948. He subsequently joined the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., as a physicist and participated in many of the nuclear bomb test programs conducted in the Pacific Ocean in the 1950s through the early 1970s. He joined Edgerton, Germeshausen and Grier (EG&G) in 1960 and moved back to Massachusetts. He and his family bought a home in Needham, where he lived for the remainder of his life, and was a member of Saint Bartholomew’s Church. In 1971 Don and several of his EG&G colleagues formed HSS Inc., located in Bedford, Massachusetts, where he was president until 1995. He remained active in retirement and especially enjoyed gardening, genealogy and maintaining a worldwide network of friends and family via the Internet. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian, and younger son Mark. He is survived by son Michael, three grandchildren, sister Florence and 10 nieces and nephews.
