Arthur F. Niederbuhl ’48

Arthur F. Niederbuhl ’48, formerly of Bloomingdale, New York, died January 10. Born in Brooklyn on October 21, 1925, he was the son of Arthur and Clara Niederbuhl. When he was a young child, Art’s family moved to Saranac Lake, New York, where his father was cured of tuberculosis. Art graduated from Saranac Lake High School and later attended St. Lawrence University, Dartmouth and Tuck and Thayer schools. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and remained in the Navy Reserve until 1961. Arthur married Norma Kieran in 1948. Art and Norma owned and operated Norman’s wholesale grocery, which was founded in 1904 by his grandfather-in-law. He was also a teacher at St. Pius high school, where he taught advanced math. He said teaching at St. Pius was one of the most fulfilling things he did as an adult. Art was very active in the community and served as president of the board of directors for the Saranac Lake General Hospital and the Saranac Lake Savings and Loan. He was a gifted pianist who played professionally as a young man. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing bridge and poker, family gatherings and eating out with friends. Norma passed away in 2015. He is survived by six children, 22 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.
