Samuel Allen Wilkinson III ’48
Samuel Allen Wilkinson III ’48 died in Cumberland Center, Maine, on November 17, 2009. He came to Dartmouth with the Navy V-5 program in 1944 from Brookline (Massachusetts) High School. Returning to campus in 1946, he majored in government and belonged to Zeta Psi. He lettered in wrestling. Sam went on to Boston University Law School for his LL.B. but was recalled to the Navy for the Korean conflict, serving on a destroyer, USS Furse. The crew remained lifelong friends who stayed in close touch. Returning to Boston in 1951 he practiced real estate and trust law in Boston for 10 years before moving north to Maine. He subsequently became a bank trust officer, retiring as clerk of a federal bankruptcy court. He was handy with a rifle or rod and reel as well as being a skilled yachtsman. Sam was a loyal alumnus, serving as class president and in other offices for multiple terms, and was on the class executive committee when he died. He also served his church and community in many capacities. He never missed a class activity if he could possibly be present. Sally cheerfully accompanied him to most of them. She survives him, with daughters Kate, Sarah, Tu’87, Laura and Anne; stepsons Matthew, Derek and Philip; and brother Dan ’60.
