Carlton F. Evans ’48
Carlton F. Evans ’48 died peacefully on January 26 at Valley View Nursing Center in Goshen, New York. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, where he spent his early years and graduated high school at the New Hampton School. Carl served with the Navy during World War II as a lieutenant (j.g.) navigator on the USS Stribling. He attended Dartmouth under the Navy V-12 program, earning his A.B. and Tuck/Thayer master’s in 1948. He played varsity football and was a member of Beta Theta Pi. He was married to Janice Barrett Evans on August 21, 1948. Carl was a dedicated alumnus serving the College in a variety of capacities throughout his life, including as president of the Atlanta alumni club, on many reunion committees and by interviewing potential students. He said his Dartmouth and naval experiences instilled a lifetime desire to serve his country, community, church and family. Following graduation he had a long and varied career with International Paper Co., beginning with sales positions and then shifting to research positions in Camden, Arizona, and Sterling Forest, New York, where he enjoyed the intellectual challenge of creating packaging solutions including train covers, which involved riding the rails through the South. He was awarded several patents. He lived his last 42 years in Warwick, New York, where he served the community as chair of the town recreation committee, board member of Warwick Community Bandwagon, on the advisory committee to the local United Way and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. Carl is survived by Janice, four children and 10 grandchildren.
