Walter Z. Newman ’48
Walter Z. Newman ’48, M.D.,of Orlando, Florida, died March 9, 2014. Born October 22, 1925, in Bethlehem, Connecticut, he grew up in Manhattan after the family moved there when he was 10 years old. He enrolled at Cornell University under the Navy V-12 program and served in the service from 1943 to 1946. He returned to get his A.B. from Dartmouth, where he was a member of Casque & Gauntlet and Tabard/Sigma Chi. Walter earned his doctor of medicine from New York Medical College and came to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to serve as a resident doctor at Mercy Hospital and subsequently opened his private practice there. After more than 40 years he retired from his practice and then practiced emergency room medicine at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, until 2005. He was active in the community and local politics and served as doctor for the Pennsylvania Athletic Commission and Meyers High School football team for many years. He was past president of the Pennsylvania Municipal Authorities Association, a member of the East Side Landfill Authority and served two terms each on the Wilkes-Barre Area school board and city council. His wife, Margaret, died in 1980. He is survived by son George; daughter Patty and her husband, Charles; daughter Grace; brother George; and other family and friends.
