S. Robert Tarrant ’48

S. Robert Tarrant ’48 of Saint Augustine, Florida, died September 12, 2013, at Flagler Hospital surrounded by his family. Born and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, Bob attended Dartmouth for a year before joining the Navy. Returning after World War II, he graduated with both a bachelor’s and master’s in physics in 1951. He subsequently earned a master’s in electrical engineering from New York University. Bob worked for Western Electric Company for six years before transferring to Bell Labs, where he worked as a systems engineer until his retirement in 1987. During his working years and retirement he enjoyed calling square dances in his spare time. Upon relocating from New Jersey to Saint Augustine in 1990, he was busy volunteering with the Saint John’s County Library, teaching computer operations for 10 years, serving as treasurer for the Saint Augustine Shores Homeowner’s Association and the Sons of the American Revolution and working with the Saint John’s County Recreation Association. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his siblings Thomas and Constance. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Katherine; daughter Gail and her husband, Bill; daughter Sharon and her husband, Jim; brother John; granddaughters Katie and Andrea; and many nieces and nephews.
