James J. McLaughlin ’48

James J. McLaughlin ’48 died on August 9, 2017, at his home in East Hampton, New York, with his wife, Annelie, at his side. He had Parkinson’s disease for more than 20 years. James was born in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and after graduating from the manual training high school in Brooklyn received a four-year scholarship to Dartmouth through the Navy V-12 program. He spent two years in the Navy Air Corps during World War II. At Dartmouth he was active in the canoe club, DOC, The Daily Dartmouth and Pi Lambda Phi. Throughout his life he was a fundraiser for the College and supporter of class functions. He and Annelie, who were married in May 2000, attended several of our mini-reunions. James had a successful financial career, and in 2008 closed his bond firm and joined Lantern Investments of Melville, New York, where he remained active until a few years ago. Annelie said his favorite pastimes were hunting for finds at weekend yard sales, cheering on the Mets and reading history and biography. He loved traveling to Ireland, from where his family originated, and she estimated that he had visited that country more than 20 times. During the 17 years the couple was together in East Hampton, they enjoyed its natural beauty. In addition to his wife, James is survived by children Mark, Jane and James, stepchildren Christine and James and 10 grandchildren.
