Austin H. Gedney ’48
Austin H. Gedney ’48 of Claremont, New Hampshire, died from cancer on December 12, 2012. “Bud” graduated from Mamaroneck (New York) High School in 1944 and Dartmouth in 1948. In Hanover he jointed Zeta Psi and was a member of the Interfraternity Council and the Glee Club, developing vocal skills that were most helpful to our reunion sing-a-longs. In 1949 Bud married “the prettiest girl in the world,” Virginia Appel from Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. He spent his entire career in the advertising business, starting at the Biao Co., then McCann Erickson, and finally as one of the original partners in the startup Carrafiello Diehl and Associates (CDA). At CDA Bud was instrumental in introducing the entire Centrum and Stress-Tab vitamin line to the American public. In 1986 he and Ginny retired to New Hampshire and spent the balance of his years enjoying New England, the Dartmouth community and spending time with their family of four children, nine grandchildren and several very large dogs. Bud was a lifelong advocate and activist for Dartmouth, where he was a member of the Alumni Council and held managerial positions in the alumni class of 1948 from class agent to president. He was instrumental in establishing our ongoing Scholarship Athlete of the Year Award. Bud is survived by Ginny; son Chip and his wife, Sue; daughter Lisa and her husband, Jim; son Bart and his wife, Caroline; and grandchildren Scott, Kristen, Kevin, Kathleen, Kelly, Jimmy, Ryan, Melanie and Jake.
