George Charles MacGillivray ’48

George Charles MacGillivray ’48 died in Frederick, Maryland, on December 3, 2010. Mac grew up in Arlington, Massachusetts. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in WW II and served with the 1st Marine Division on Guadalcanal and New Britain, receiving the Navy Medal for Valor. He was sent to Hanover to join the Marine V-12 program and as a hard-bitten sergeant he found it tough to adjust to the boot camp environment on campus. He was also slowed up by recurrence of malaria. He joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon and majored in geography. He moved on to Clark University for a master’s in cartography and in 1950 went to Washington, D.C. He joined the CIA in its cartography library, where he became division chief. He retired in 1982. He was an officer and life member in the 1st Marine Division Association, serving as chairman of its scholarship fund for many years. His wife, Gloria, predeceased him. He is survived by children Jeff, Jim and Kathy.
