Lewis C. Pounds ’48

Lewis C. Pounds ’48 died on March 31, 2014, the College has recently learned. He was living in Lincoln, California. He was born May 7, 1926, in New Rochelle, New York. His family summered every year in the West Hampton area of Long Island, where he usually could be found sailing in Moriches Bay. He graduated from Deerfield (Massachusetts) Academy, then signed up for the V-12 Navy Reserve. While in training he studied art at Hobart and Colgate colleges. He concluded his education at Dartmouth, where he was a member of Dragon, with a degree in chemistry. He then went to work in Stamford, Connecticut, for the American Cyanamid Co. researching and developing plastics. In 1949 he married Susannah “Sue” Emerson. They had children Geoffrey, Ian, Lindsay, Stephen and Wendy. After working with Cyanamid for 31 years, Lewis left the company and served as a consultant until his retirement in 1996. Lewis and Sue traveled often in their later years, including trips to England, Ireland and Switzerland and vacations in Bermuda and the Virgin Islands. Sue died in 1996 after a battle with cancer and in 2006 Lewis relocated to Lincoln to be with family.
