Marc A. Wyse ’48

Marc A. Wyse ’48, who was living in Beachwood, Ohio, died July 2. Born to Hungarian immigrants, Mark grew up in the garment district of New York City and graduated from John Adams High School, where he was editor of the school newspaper. He attended both Dartmouth and Adelbert College of Case Western Reserve University, earning his bachelor’s in English. Marc and his first wife, Lois, founded Wyse Advertising in 1951, which became one of Cleveland, Ohio’s largest and best-known advertising agencies. Their best-known work included adding the “Beyond” to a company called Bed and Bath and Lois’ now famous tagline, “With a name like Smucker’s, it has to be good.” They divorced in 1980, but continued to work together professionally. Marc was a board member of the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the Cleveland Scholarship Program. His second wife, Sheila, said that even after a devastating stroke six years ago, her husband was determined to walk and drive again and continued to give motivational speeches. He was on the verge of publishing his memoirs, The Way I Saw It, when he died. Marc is survived by Sheila, children Katherine, Jennifer and Robert and five grandchildren.
