Ralph N. Manuel ’58, Ph.D., former dean of the College, died in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on November 15, 2024, after a serious fall a few days earlier.
Frank P. Raymond ’58, who died on June 27, 2024, lived his life in Connecticut. After “Skip” graduated from Dartmouth in 1959, he served a tour of duty with the U.S.
Wayne L. Hamilton ’58, Ph.D., died September 19, 2024. Wayne was born in Kanab, Utah, at the north rim of the Grand Canyon, where his dad worked for the National Park Service.
Walter A. Bowlby Jr. ’58 passed away September 10, 2024. Walt grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey, and raised his family in nearby Middletown.
Harold R. Douglas ’58 passed away on June 3 in Portland, Oregon. Hal came to Dartmouth from Peoria (Illinois) High School, where his basketball team was inducted into the Peoria Hall of Fame.

Myles J. Slosberg ’58, Tu’59, passed away on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, on August 31. “Milo” graduated from Brookline (Massachusetts) High School and lived his whole life in the Boston area.

Roger L. Rice ’58 passed away recently, as confirmed in May, although the date of death is unknown. Roger grew up in Concord, New Hampshire. At Dartmouth he played freshman football, hockey, and track.
Paul J. Duffy Jr. ’58 died on February 4, 2023. Paul entered Dartmouth from the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut. He was a member of Psi Upsilon and Dragon.
Richard A. Ray ’58, Ph.D., died on April 10 in North Carolina. Dick was born in New Orleans and graduated from high school in Atlanta. At Dartmouth he majored in philosophy and was active in Young Democrats and The Dartmouth.

David H. Cassidy ’58 passed away in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, of Parkinson’s disease on August 13, 2023. Dave grew up in White River Junction and Newport, Vermont, majored in chemistry, and later earned an M.B.A. at NYU.

Louis J. Bloomfield ’58, Tu’59, Th’59, died June 2. Lou grew up in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and lived nearly his whole life in the Cleveland suburbs. Lou was in the Tuck-Thayer five-year program and was a member of Pi Lambda Phi.
Charles G. Nessler Jr. ’58, Th’59, passed away June 27, 2023, after living his entire life in Chester, Connecticut. Charlie was in the Dartmouth-Thayer five-year program and graduated with an A.B. and M.S.
Frederick B. Bagnall ’58 died December 31, 2023. Fred grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, and came to Dartmouth from Vermont Academy.
Brendan V. McAdams Jr. ’58, M.D., passed away at his home in San Luis Obispo, California, on January 18 as a result of a melanoma that had progressed to his lungs.
John A. Kavanagh ’58 passed away June 16. His wife, Derreth, says, “It was very peaceful but a surprise. He suffered a stroke and did not recover.
Phalen G. Hurewitz ’58 died October 15, 2023, in Southern California. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Chuck gave piano concerts as a teenager with his mother, an opera singer, and his love of music never left him.
Malcolm J. Hibbard ’58, Ph.D., died in Santa Rosa, California, on June 30. “Hibb” grew up in Rockport, Massachusetts, and graduated from Vermont Academy.
Joseph M. Hayse Jr. ’58, Ph.D., died in Lexington, Kentucky, on March 12. Joe was born in Louisville, Kentucky, and was a Deke at Dartmouth.
David C. Glendinning ’58 passed away on September 25, 2023, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He grew up in Andover, Massachusetts, and attended Phillips Academy.

W. Grafton Berger ’58, a long-time resident of Tucson, Arizona, died March 18. Grafton was born and raised in Albuquerque.

David S. Stevens ’58 passed away on February 25. Dave entered Dartmouth from East Chicago, Indiana. He majored in sociology, played freshman football and rugby, and marched with the Army ROTC drill team.
John R. Sherwood III ’58, an urban planner and competitive sailor, died of complications of a stroke on April 12 at his residence in Annapolis, Maryland.
Philip K. Livingston ’58—adventurer, Marine, and lifelong aviator “forever lured by the excitement of the unknown”—died March 20 in Alaska. Phil grew up in Pittsburgh and played lacrosse all four years at Dartmouth.

Frank Gado ’58, Ph.D., died on June 8 in West Hartford, Vermont, after a long struggle with brain cancer. Frank was born in Fairview, New Jersey, to immigrant parents from Piemonte, Italy.
Alan B. Gazzaniga ’58, M.D.,passed away on June 17 at his home in Orange County, California. A zoology major at Dartmouth, Al played football for three years and was a member of Sigma Chi, Sphinx, Green Key, and Newman Club.

James J. Meeker ’58 passed away at his home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on January 24, 2021. Jim was a brother with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and English major who later ran an investment and trust business in San Francisco.

Eugene K. Laff ’58 died on January 9, 2020. Originally from Baltimore, Gene majored in economics and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from Harvard Law School, worked on Wall Street, and retired to Scottsdale, Arizona.

Donald W. Aitken Jr. ’58 passed away on February 27 at his Mexico home. Don was a member of Gamma Delta, ski patroller, and played in the Marching Band. John Kemeny selected him as one of his first honors math students.
William C. Tindal III ’58 died in Australia in March. Bill grew up in Hartford, Connecticut, was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and Sphinx, and rowed crew.

Gerald M. Polin ’58, M.D., died May 21, 2021, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Jerry grew up in Philadelphia and left Dartmouth in 1957 to attend Jefferson Medical College.

Robert E. Pendergast ’58 passed away on February 16, 2021, of lung cancer. Butch was a Delta Kappa Epsilon brother, majored in geology, and became a career geologist. He was founder and president of Geotechnical Engineering Corp.
Thomas C. Chomentowski ’58 died at his home on September 11, 2020. He was a philosophy major and a member of Kappa Sigma. Tom grew up in Philadelphia and, as a TWA pilot, was a longtime resident of Vermont.
Arthur H. Nissman ’58 died November 28, 2021. Records are incomplete, but it appears that Arthur did not graduate with our class. He lived in Topanga Canyon, California.

John E. Mehl ’58 passed away April 25, 2021, after a long illness. He grew up in the Pittsburgh area, majored in history, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Later he earned two divinity degrees and a Ph.D. in education.

William Clarance Van Law Jr. ’58 of The Villages, Florida, died of cancer May 30. He is survived by Kay, his wife of 39 years, five children (three hers, two his) and seven grandchildren.
Edward Day Harris Jr. ’58, physician, researcher, educator and editor, died peacefully on May 21 at his son Chandler’s home in Thetford Center, Vermont, after a battle with a rare salivary gland cancer.
