Charles Clayton Winchester Jr. ’58

Charles Clayton Winchester Jr. ’58, a patent attorney and longtime resident of Milton, Massachusetts, died at home surrounded by his family on October 21, 2009, according to his son Stephen. Charles was born in Woburn, Massachusetts, and graduated from Newton (Massachusetts) High School before attending Dartmouth. Known on campus as Charlie, he majored in economics and earned his J.D. from Boston College Law School in 1961. That same year he was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar and joined the Boston firm of Fish and Richardson, from which he retired in 2002 as chairman of the board. He was also a member of the American Bar Association, the Patent Law Association and the U.S. Bar-Japanese patent liaison committee. Charles is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet; six children, including Joan Sachs ’91; seven grandchildren; and sister Jane. He was active in Milton affairs, serving as a member of town meetings from 1972 until his death, the finance committee and the schools committee. In 1982 he was elected town moderator and worked in that position for nine years. In the 1990s he also served as chairman of Milton’s fire department study committee and from 1998 to 2009 he was chairman of Milton’s school building committee. He also was a corporator of the Milton Hospital.
