Phalen G. Hurewitz ’58

Phalen G. Hurewitz ’58 died October 15, 2023, in Southern California. Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, Chuck gave piano concerts as a teenager with his mother, an opera singer, and his love of music never left him. At Dartmouth he majored in history, was active in the Pre-Law Club and Tau Epsilon Phi, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He considered a career as a pianist but ultimately chose to become a lawyer and earned his law degree from Stanford University in 1961. For a few years he practiced with a small San Francisco firm and then moved to Beverly Hills, California, where he found a way to combine his love of music with the law by practicing entertainment law. His clients included the Captain and Tenille and the Monkees. In addition, he taught at a small law school, was active in the leadership of Temple Isaiah, organized a chamber orchestra, and helped form Alternative Living for the Aging, which operates a cooperative housing facility for elders. Nothing made Chuck happier than to sit at the piano and play Broadway show tunes, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren singing along. Chuck is survived by his wife, Renee, one daughter, and two sons.
