Harold R. Douglas ’58

Harold R. Douglas ’58 passed away on June 3 in Portland, Oregon. Hal came to Dartmouth from Peoria (Illinois) High School, where his basketball team was inducted into the Peoria Hall of Fame. He majored in economics, was a member of Phi Delta Theta and Casque & Gauntlet, and marched with the Army ROTC. In senior year he was a forward on the Dartmouth basketball varsity team that went 11-3 in the Ivy League and 20-4 overall, tying the all-time Green record set in 1943. He met his future wife, Jeannine, on a blind date as a junior and they enjoyed a 65-year marriage. After their wedding and his hitch in the Army, they moved to Oregon in 1965 and Hal worked in sales at Aetna Insurance. In his 40s Hal became a dedicated fan of classical music and a season ticketholder at the Oregon Symphony and Portland Opera. In retirement he volunteered as a Meals on Wheels delivery driver and was the No. 1 fan at his grandkids’ sports events. In his 50th reunion book, he reflected: “All in all it’s been a great journey. Not all was caviar and single-malt Scotch. But the peaks still outweigh the valleys by a landslide.” Hal is survived by Jeannine, one daughter, two sons, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
