Steven P. Toth ’58

Steven P. Toth ’58 passed away March 5 in Hobart, Indiana, following a bad fall in 2023 that resulted in surgery for a brain bleed. Steve was born in East Chicago, Indiana, and lived his life in that area. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, with his senior year at Tuck, and was a member of Chi Phi and Sphinx, played end on the football team, and was active in the Newman Club. He served in the U.S. Army and then earned a master’s in education at Indiana University. For the next 39 years Steve taught U.S. history and social studies at Roosevelt High, his alma mater. Steve was a long-suffering Chicago Cubs and Bears fan, sticking with his teams through thick and thin. He was an active member of the Catholic Church, Kiwanis, and the American Legion and enjoyed golf, reading, and gardening. He was described by a friend as “an earnest, peaceful man, finding joy in the everyday things in life.” Steve is survived by his wife, Mary; three children; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
