John Edward McHugh ’58
John Edward McHugh ’58, M.D., died at home in Holyoke, Massachusetts, on February 22. At Dartmouth he belonged to the Glee Club, Outing Club, Theta Delta Chi and Dragon. Ward Burian ’58 recalls “John’s great low-key sense of humor.” Walt Fogarty ’58 says, “He was a very popular Theta Delt who married his college sweetheart Ann,” who predeceased him. John grew up Holyoke and graduated from Deerfield Academy with several other ’58s. His lengthy Boston Globe obituary said he received his M.D. from Tufts University and returned to Holyoke in 1967 to practice in internal medicine. He co-founded Holyoke Internists Inc. in 1971 and was a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the College of Chest Physicians. He also served as chief of medicine and director of the respiratory departments at Holyoke Hospital and Providence Hospital and was active in state and local government healthcare activities. He and Ann were heavily engaged in local, state and national politics, where he served on the Democratic National Finance Committee in 1988. Both were grand marshals of the Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was also involved with the Boys Club, Golden Gloves boxing and many other public service groups. In his private life John was an avid fly fisherman and fly tier and a member of Trout Unlimited and the Commission to Restore Atlantic Salmon to the Connecticut River. John is survived by children Kathryn, John, Peter and Elizabeth, four grandchildren, and two brothers, including Edward ’54.
