Harold Young McCulloch Jr. ’71 died October 23, 2023. Born in Newport News, Virginia, Hal attended public schools, where he studied Latin and excelled in track and field throughout high school. At Dartmouth he earned an A.B.
Vance Howard Smith ’71 passed away on May 4. He attended military school in New Mexico, graduated with distinction from Dartmouth, and went on to earn his doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1975.
Bob “Leo” Kelcourse ’71 died July 17 in Clearwater, Florida, of complications of pancreatic cancer.
Matthew B. Carroll ’71 died on May 18 at his home in Saratoga Springs, New York. He had a large brain and a big heart; the former he donated to the Harvard brain bank.
Malcolm l. Jones Jr. ’71 passed away unexpectedly in the Lake Tahoe, California, area on July 17, 2023, while at a family reunion. Born on March 31, 1949, he was raised and attended high school in Aurora, Illinois.
Randolph H. Pherson ’71 died at his home in Great Falls, Virginia, on January 11 of complications from vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic syndrome (VEXAS).
Peter Michael Etzel ’71 of Norwell, Massachusetts, passed away on December 15, 2022. He fought a courageous 10-month battle against glioblastoma, rallying frequently to spend time with his family.

Francis X. Canning ’71 died of Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Lancaster, California, on September 29, 2023. He earned his A.B. with a double major in mathematics and physics, followed by an M.S. (1977) and Ph.D.
Mark Robert Bardo ’71 died peacefully of pulmonary fibrosis at the VNA Hospice House in Concord, New Hampshire, on March 13, 2023. He was born in Danbury, Connecticut, where he spent his formative years on the family farm.
Gunnar Klintberg ’71 died April 28, 2023, after a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
Colby Shannon Morgan Jr. ’71 died on May 24, 2022, in Memphis, Tennessee. Born on March 29, 1949, in Marshalltown, Iowa, Colby grew up in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, and graduated from Dartmouth and Vanderbilt Law School (1974).

Robert Yamins Lider ’71 died unexpectedly of cardiac arrest August 18, 2022, in Venice, Italy, just two months after organizing the class 50+1 reunion in Hanover. Bob was born February 15, 1949, in Newton, Massachusetts.
Willard Riley ’71 died on April 10, 2021, from heart failure. Born in 1949 in Sidney, New York, to Elsie Ruland and Ralph Riley, Bill spent his formative years in Littleton, New Hampshire.

Charles B. Duncan ’71 of Claremont, New Hampshire, passed away at home on May 3. Charlie was the first of five children born to Richard C. and Theofilia (Wiltowski) Duncan.
John Bacon ’71 died on March 16 of heart failure, leaving his wife, Susan, a children Alex and Kate. John was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Concord, Massachusetts.
Frank C. Lord ’71 died on July 3 after a long illness, leaving his wife of 37 years, Suzanne, and sister Louise and her husband, Mitch, along with many nieces and nephews.
Benedict Joseph Semmes ’71, M.D., passed away on June 18. He was a resident of Wonalancet, New Hampshire, and New Orleans. He was born on October 20, 1949, in post-war Bremerhaven, Germany.
Stephen F. White ’71 of San Antonio, Texas, died on February 25, 2014, the College has recently learned. He was born in Troy, New York, and raised in Reading, Massachusetts. Steve came to Dartmouth from Reading High School.
H. Allen Rheem Jr. ’71 passed away on June 21 in Palm Springs, California. He was born July 10, 1949, in Denver, where he spent most of his life (leaving only to attend college) until he retired to Palm Springs in 2008.
Thomas Armand Martinez ’71 died on November 19, 2019, from Lewy body dementia. He was blessed with meeting his four granddaughters on his 70th birthday, the week before he passed away.

Glenn M. Glesmann ’71, M.D., died from a brief illness surrounded by his family on February 16. He was born in New York City on September 17, 1949, the son of Sylvia, who survives, and the late John B. Glesmann.

Charles W. Collier ’71 died on August 2. He graduated from Phillips Andover in 1967, studied religion at Dartmouth, and earned a master’s in theological studies from Harvard Divinity School in 1973.
Daniel A. Westberg ’71,D.Phil., died on October 18, 2017, in a boating accident in Upper Nashotah Lake, Wisconsin. Daniel grew up in Japan, where his parents were missionaries with the Evangelical Covenant Church.

Robert Uhlmann ’71 passed away on October 23, 2017. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 20, 1949, he was the youngest of three children. He enjoyed an idyllic childhood in Kansas City where he attended Pembroke Hill.
C. Luke O’Reilly ’71 died of cancer on June 21, 2017, in Los Angeles. Luke was a gifted athlete. He started alpine skiing at an early age and later became a champion water skier.
Oliver G. Hess ’71, lawyer, movie producer, devoted husband and father, died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on January 30, in Ojai, California. His death was due to complications from an aortic resection surgery.
Cameron E. Bopp ’71 died on December 20, 2016, in Freeman, Maine, in a car accident. Cam received a medical degree from the University of Missouri and completed his family medicine residency in Augusta, Maine.
John Edward Shanahan ’71 passed away quietly on April 24, 2017, at his home in Deland, Florida, after fighting idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis for months.
