Gunnar Klintberg ’71

Gunnar Klintberg ’71 died April 28, 2023, after a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, to Lars-Gunnar and Gunborg Klintberg, Gunnar completed school in Sweden and attended Dartmouth on a basketball scholarship (1969-72), earning an A.B. in international political science. Talented in languages, Gunnar attended the Russian language interpreter school in Uppsala, Sweden, for military service while earning an M.B.A. in Russian and Eastern European studies from the University of Uppsala (1973-75). He began his private career with the Axel Johnson office in Moscow and, after three years, was transferred to N.Y.C. as assistant to the president (1979-82). He joined the North American Banking Corp. (1982-86) in corporate finance. In 1986 he and a partner formed Holberg Inc., a private equity firm working primarily in food distribution and parking services. From 1997 to 2008 he served on the boards of Thule Inc., AmeriServe Food, the Swedish American Chamber of Commerce, and Standard Parking. He was a representative to town meeting in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. He stayed active with the College as an alumni interviewer and regional agent in the 1990s. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jamie (who met him after picking him up while hitchhiking in San Diego), and extended family and friends.
