Robert William Hand ’71

Robert William Hand ’71, M.D.—“Dr. Hand” to many—died on May 22. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and grew up in East Greenville, Pennsylvania. He excelled in high school and was proud to be inducted into the school’s athletic and academic halls of fame. At Dartmouth he majored in math and chemistry. He later attended Yale Medical School. He did his residency in Maryland and fellowship at Mass General in pulmonary and critical care. Bob practiced in Medford, Massachusetts, for many years. He was chief of medicine at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford and served on the town’s board of health for many years. Bob met his future wife, Marianne Lynch, on Super Bowl Sunday in 1992 on a blind date at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The family moved to Bangor, Maine, in 2004. Bob’s highest privilege working with his colleagues at Penobscot Respiratory. Bob had a great life in Maine. He was a devoted fan and supporter of the Bangor Symphony and enjoyed his time in Grand Lake Stream and reconnecting with his joy of fly fishing. He underwent cancer treatments and recently had challenges with advanced kidney disease. Bob is survived by Marianne and children Caleb, Emily Elizabeth, and Fletcher.
