Vance Howard Smith ’71

Vance Howard Smith ’71 passed away on May 4. He attended military school in New Mexico, graduated with distinction from Dartmouth, and went on to earn his doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine in 1975. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1975 to 1983. He spent his career until retirement in 2015 as a vascular surgeon. At Dartmouth Vance was active in the Dartmouth Outing Club and the Tucker fellowship. He also competed in swimming and diving for the College. As an alumnus, he interviewed prospective students from the Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, Michigan, area. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; siblings Anthony and Kimberly; children Jocelyn, Ryan, and Christopher; and four grandchildren.
