Thomas Armand Martinez ’71

Thomas Armand Martinez ’71 died on November 19, 2019, from Lewy body dementia. He was blessed with meeting his four granddaughters on his 70th birthday, the week before he passed away. Tommy was born in San Diego and graduated as class valedictorian from University High School in 1967. He matriculated at Dartmouth and transferred his sophomore year to Stanford University, where he graduated with a B.S. in civil engineering and a master’s in construction management. After graduate school Tommy moved back to San Diego, where he started working in the construction business. There he met and married Emily Sue Allen, to whom he remained married until his death. In 1985 Tom launched a new business, Plateau Electrical Constructors, in Salt Lake City, and he and his family moved to nearby Park City, where they lived for 11 years. In 1996 he moved his business to Seattle and his family settled on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Tommy led an adventurous life. He loved to ski, mountain climb, traverse the Grand Canyon, explore the Everglades, trek in the Sierra Nevadas, and surf in California, Hawaii, and Mexico. He and Emily were living aboard their sailboat when his illness was first diagnosed. He leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends as well as his wife, three daughters, four granddaughters, and a sister and brother.
