Bruce Sheridan Scolton ’71

Bruce Sheridan Scolton ’71,a distinguished attorney, an excellent athlete, and devoted family man, passed away on April 24, 2019, in Panama, New York, due to an undiagnosed genetic disease. At Panama City High School Bruce served as class secretary and treasurer, student body treasurer, and captain of the football and basketball teams. At Dartmouth Bruce majored in government, effectively managed half of the Alpha Chi Alpha budget as house manager, and quarterbacked the fraternity’s intramural football team with his exceptional speed and accurate passing. A selfless, low-key approach exemplified his outstanding leadership style. Upon graduation Bruce served two active years in the U.S. Army and in 1976 graduated from Duke University Law School. Bruce next embarked on a 40-year career as a partner in the law firm of Erikson Webb Scolton & Hajdu and concurrently served as justice of the Town of Harmony, New York. Athletics were an important part of his life, and Bruce became a longtime supporter of his high school’s athletics department, serving as an assistant coach, scout, and basketball referee. Bruce’s free time was spent reading and golfing, and he never missed an opportunity to be outdoors hiking, hunting, and bird-watching. He was ever-present at his grandchildren’s athletics and musical activities. Bruce’s son, Eric, related, “My father cherished his time at Dartmouth and spoke of it often to all who were willing to listen.” Joanne, Bruce’s wife of 42 years, died in 2013. Bruce is survived by Eric and daughter Krista.
