This column was due at the end of the College year of June 30. We’ll look back and summarize preliminary highlights of the year. We’ve written six of these columns, almost always stretching to find news of interest beyond just our class. Seven newsletters have filled the inboxes of classmates for whom we have email addresses. Those have highlighted and celebrated the hard work of others, such as vice president Frank Gould, who continues to set the standard for mini-reunions, including the upcoming one during the weekend of October 10, 11, and 12. He has led the way as the class has successfully adopted minis during weekends earlier than Homecoming. Treasurer Mike Simberkoff again ran a tight fiscal ship anchored by strong dues collections together with extra contributions to support class projects. That has allowed us to continue supporting those projects at levels above what we had budgeted. President Hal Bernsen has set the stage through strong leadership, evidenced by the class’s outstanding performance for the Dartmouth College Fund. In concert with the team of his cohead agents, Walter Vail and I, this year bolstered by the efforts of Joel Portugal and other class agents—Gersh Abraham, Phil Bell, Skip Coggin, Mel Croner, Bob Downey, Pete Durno, Ben Fuller, Doug Fusonie, Jerry Manne, Don McCree, Tryg Myhren, Bob “Mr. 100%” Portland, Dave Pratt, Sam Silverstein, Dan Wilkes—the class busted through its primary dollar goal. There were other smaller minis, such as the annual one in southwest Florida and those put together by individuals such as Mort Fisher, Ted Kleinman, and Art Lindenauer and separately Craig Haines, Dave Sharrock, Paul Robinson, and me. We continued to count too many deaths recorded by our loyal necrologist Rob Goodell. We hear comments reflecting both sides of the political spectrum, most of which were irrelevant to the outstanding students that walked across the stage at graduation on June 15. From feedback, most of us believe the College is in good hands with President Sian Beilock.
