Vincent Wendel Jones ’52
Vincent Wendel Jones ’52, who was born on March 31, 1930, in Long Beach, California, passed away on June 11 in Walnut Creek, California. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach. At Dartmouth Vince was a government major (graduating cum laude) and a varsity football letterman. He was a member of Psi Upsilon, Casque & Gauntlet, Delta Sigma Rho (president), Green Key (treasurer), Paleopitus (president), Interfraternity Council (president), Forensic Union and the Flying Club. After graduation he was awarded a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University in England. At Oxford Vince studied philosophy, politics and economics and took up the game of rugby. As a team captain he toured Australia, competing with the American All-Star team. Vince then attended Stanford Law School, graduating in 1957. Vince first joined the law firm of Brobeck, Phleger and Harrison in San Francisco and several years later became general counsel for Hilp & Rhodes, a commercial builder. In 1964 Vince joined the western region of Sears, Roebuck and Co. and returned to southern California. He eventually moved to Chicago to work as general counsel for the Sears subsidiary Coldwell Banker. In his later years Vince lived in Concord, California, near family. After graduation from Stanford he married Laurine Ellis. They later divorced. He is survived by children Lydia, Valerie, Justin and Emily, 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
