President John Kemeny (teaching, top left) made bringing coeducation to Dartmouth an urgent priority and, in April 1971, the faculty voted 111-18 to recommend admitting women for the first time. In the fall of 1972, 177 first-year women entered the College along with 74 female transfer students, ending Dartmouth’s two-century tradition of being all-male.
