Larry Seymour provides a newsy note: “I spent my first three years at Dartmouth as a physics and premed major. After junior year I was accepted into the Dartmouth Medical School and finished my last two years at Cornell Medical School in N.Y.C. Then I trained in neurosurgery at the University of Minnesota and ended up spending my life in the Minnesota area. My wife and I have had eight children, 15 grandchildren (one died of cancer at age 16), and nine great-grandchildren. My lovely wife, Joan, and I have been married for 67 years. She is suffering difficulties with balance, requiring a walker and making travel much more difficult for her. I am fairly healthy and ignore the two-page list of diagnoses I get when I leave my doctor’s office. Friendships with classmates and med school classes include Fred Chang, Al Friedman, Ray Austin, and the late Kevin Ryan. I enjoyed Dartmouth and considered going back to DMS in 1969 when I finished my training, but that’s a long story. I continue to have a wide interest in music (piano) and reading. I miss skiing and Hanover.”

In response to my college rankings in The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) in the last edition of this column, Bill Loyer shares his opinion: “Suggest you google Duke Chronicle opinion piece; WSJ’s ‘New College’ rankings are a joke. The WSJ is not what it once was. I no longer am a subscriber, and its college ranking article is one of the many reasons why.”

Word of the day: caliginous—misty, dim, obscure, dark. Given current conditions, my thoughts have become caliginous as more Caligulas appear on the screen.

With sadness I report the passing of William “Bill” H. Miles, Clifford “Cliff” W. Donahower, Lester “Les” A. Reid, David M. Whiteford, Russell M. Smith, Richard “Dicky” S. Scobie, and Elliott G. Weinstein. In a notice to me of the death of her dad, Bill Miles, Alia Miles writes: “He loved his time at Dartmouth.”
