Charles “Chaz” Nierman ’82

Charles “Chaz” Nierman ’82 of Marblehead, Massachusetts, passed away on June 24, 2021. At Dartmouth Chaz was a member of the freshmen crew team and active with Hillel. He traveled extensively and spent the summer of 1980 in Israel taking courses at Hebrew University. A talented scholar while at Dartmouth, Chaz had a great interest in writing, languages, and reading. He graduated early and went on to earn a J.D. in just two years at Boston University, after which he developed a successful law practice in Marblehead. Classmate Peter Frechette ’82 remembers Chaz’s fine character and persistence, saying, “I was always impressed with the courage and grace with which Chaz handled the challenges society placed before him.” Matt Hoffman ’82 remembers the many funny stories and jokes Chaz sent to Matt, which Matt tried to match in wit but says he never could. Matt remembers most that “Chaz had a heart of gold and was especially caring about his law clients, friends, and dogs.” According to his personal attorney, Philip Ginti, Chaz was brilliant, funny, and generous to a fault. He was a gifted attorney who spent much of his free time mentoring other attorneys and doing pro bono work. Described as a quiet philanthropist who was kind to many in need, Chaz helped his clients both financially and with pro bono legal advice, never asking for anything in return. Chaz was a prince among men and loved by many and will be sorely missed.
