Paul Frederick Egner Jr. ’59

Paul Frederick Egner Jr. ’59 died August 23, 2012, in Houston. He entered Dartmouth from Ambler (Pennsylvania) Joint High School, where he was on the Student Council and National Honor Society. At Dartmouth he was an economics major, participated in the band and the Air Force ROTC and its drill team for two years. After Dartmouth he went to the U.S. Coast Guard Officer Candidate School. Paul was assigned to duty in San Francisco, where he met Jane, his wife of 52 years. In 1963 Paul joined Shell Oil Co. in California before moving to Houston in 1975. At Shell Oil his career ranged from retail marketing to marine oil spill response before he retired in 1997. He stayed in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve, from which he retired as a captain in 1986. Paul participated in many organizations, including the ports and waterway committee of the Houston Chamber of Commerce, American Petroleum Institute, the Dangerous Goods Advisory Council, the State Bar of Texas grievance committee, the Houston Bar Association fee dispute committee, Houston Grand Opera Guild and the Reserve Officers Association. Paul was a leadership class agent, a Dartmouth Partner in Community Service mentor, attended most reunions and mini-reunions and was active with the Dartmouth Club of Houston. Paul was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church, serving in various capacities at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Houston. As a loyal son of Dartmouth he will be sorely missed. Jane, his two sons, one daughter and three grandchildren survive him.
