Class of 1959
Class Notes
View All Notes for Class of 1959I am our new class secretary. Why would anyone take on such a role as we head toward life’s finish line? My habit in relinquishing jobs, roles, or positions has been to look for someone more competent and younger and convince them that they are wanted, needed, and would be great in the role. When Barry Smith contacted me, he knew I was not younger and I had spent years resigning into retirement. I tried to impress on him that someone who had taken English 2 repeat in his sophomore year may not be an ideal candidate for the job. He wasn’t prepared to take no for an answer, so I agreed to give it a try. I expect you living classmates and spouses to keep me overflowing with news and supply most of your own write-ups. If you don’t volunteer your news, I will be contacting, coercing, and begging you for news.
The main news from Minnesota is that Rod Anderson, the captain of our ’59 hockey team, died in February. David Duclos and former hockey players including All American Rusty Ingersoll ’60, Roger Hartley ’61, and Chuck Ritchie ’61 attended a celebration of his life in Minneapolis in late April. Rod taught school at The Blake Schools and he and Chuck coached their hockey teams for many years. Rod and his wife, Barb, were married for 64 years. Rod, Tom McBurney ’60, and Tom Keller ’57 were instrumental in forming a history book club in 1960 that has continued meeting in the Twin Cities ever since. About the time Tom died several years ago, I retired and rejoined the group. Their most recent book was Material World: Six Raw Materials that Shape Modern Civilization by Ed Conway, which we highly recommend. Besides myself, Roger, and Chuck, David Duclosis a regular participant.
I want to thank Charlie MacVean for serving as our class secretary since our last reunion. He has done an excellent job and I will strive to continue the standard he has set. I can only do it with everyone’s help, so keep the news flowing.
