Class Note 1959. More classmates are leaving us. John Remmers died July 7. He grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, and graduated from St. Xavier High School. At Dartmouth he joined Phi Delta Theta and the Newman and Outing clubs. He started medical school his senior year, did a year of research after his second year, and competed his M.D. degree at Harvard. Dr. Marsh Tenny at Dartmouth led John into respiratory physiology research. After stops in the U.S. Public Health Service and the University of Texas, Galveston, he settled at the University of Calgary, Canada. He accomplished seminal research in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the 1970s. He invented several treatments for OSA and created companies to make and distribute the devices. Bob Josefsberg died July 14. He attended Lafayette High School in Brooklyn. At Dartmouth he majored in English, joined Gamma Delta Chi, and was active in WDCR and the Pre-law Club. After Yale Law School he went to South Florida, where he became a revered litigator, eventually being admitted to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court. The University of Miami School of Law endowed a chair in criminal justice advocacy in his name. Bob married Marlene Danto, a former Skidmore student. They both were involved in youth substance abuse prevention. They had four children.
Dick Sameth died on August 10. He attended Millburn High School in Short Hills, New Jersey. At Dartmouth he joined Phi Tau, majored in zoology, was on The Dartmouth staff, and joined the Outing Club. Dick graduated from Tuck School in 1961 and joined the family pest control business. He became president of the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and was inducted into the NPMA Hall of Fame. He served as president of the United Way and YMCA and served several other New Jersey community organizations. A major supporter of Dartmouth, he dedicated the Life Sciences Center Sameth Classroom in 2011. Dick and his wife, Polly, were married 62 years before her passing. They raised four children.
