William S. Stout ’51

William S. Stout ’51 died on February 5 in Savannah, Georgia. Bill was a member of Psi Upsilon, Dragon, and the Interdormitory Council. He was a member of the varsity hockey team and played in the finals of one of the first national intercollegiate hockey tournaments. He is also warmly remembered as a jazz clarinet player and a member of several jazz and swing groups. His State Street Ramblers performed at Symphony Hall in Boston, the National Gallery of Art, and the White House congressional ball as well as numerous class of ’51 reunions. A talented athlete, Bill enjoyed skiing, golf, sailing, and tennis throughout his life. Bill was a gifted storyteller. Who can forget his descriptions of memorable events in his life, including facing a pistol drawn from a pillow by a Kentucky moonshiner, being caught in the middle of tribal warfare in the hills of New Guinea, and swimming behind his mother in a rowboat to help overcome polio in his left arm? Bill served for two years in the U.S. Marine Corps as an enlisted man. His business career included senior positions in sales and investment management with Aluminum Co. of America, R.W. Pressprich & Co., Tucker Anthony, and Dyflex Corp., where he was president and CEO for 20 years. Among other notable experiences he helped Ross Perot’s Electronic Data Systems Corp. go public. Active in the community and in his church, he was a trustee of the Dexter School, the Park School, and the Brookline Savings Bank. Son Bill Jr. graduated from Dartmouth in 1977.
