William M. Hamel ’57

William M. Hamel ’57 of Port Byron, New York, passed away on January 8 at his home with his wife, Carol, by his side. Bill came to Dartmouth from Hebron (Maine) Academy. At Dartmouth he majored in geology and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon, serving as its secretary his junior year and president his senior year, when he was on the Interfraternity Council. He participated in the Geological Society, the Dartmouth Outing Club, and the motor sports club. He proudly served his country as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Bill worked as a land surveyor with Ianuzzi & Romans Land Surveying of Syracuse, New York. The local community was important to Bill. He was the supervisor for the town of Mentz, New York, for six years. He was a member of the Port Byron Volunteer Fire Department for 48 years, and served as its treasurer, lieutenant, and president. His many hobbies included camping, fishing, antique clock repair, photography, astronomy, electronics, traveling, and reading. Bill is survived by Carol, his wife of 54 years, daughter Theresa, sons Christopher and James, 12 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by son Robert.
