William Johnson Breed ’52

William Johnson Breed ’52 passed away in Lebanon, New Hampshire, on December 4, 2016. Bill was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on October 12, 1929, and graduated from Marblehead (Massachusetts) High School in 1947. Bill completed a postgraduate year at Phillips Andover Academy before enrolling at Dartmouth. Bill was a member of Theta Delta Chi, participated in many extracurricular clubs and earned his varsity letter in lacrosse. He graduated in 1952 with a degree in psychology. After graduation Bill married Judith Rogers in August 1952. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving for two years. After completing his service Bill worked briefly at several Massachusetts companies before joining Booma-Breed Inc. in Swampscott, Massachusetts, a family business. In 1970 he acquired the Johnson & Dix Fuel Corp. in Springfield, Vermont, a business he expanded until he sold it to Irving Oil in 2009. He was active on many commercial, banking and public service boards in New Hampshire and Vermont, including Ledyard National Bank and David’s House, a home away from home for families of children being treated at the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth. He also was heavily involved in Dartmouth alumni organizations, including as an alumni councilor and head class agent and he was a recipient of the Dartmouth Alumni Award. In 1998 Bill was honored as one of the “Legends of Oil Heat” by the New England Fuel Institute. Judy, his wife of 64 years, children Debra, Penny, William and David and seven grandchildren survive him.
