William Hamilton Walls ’54
William Hamilton Walls ’54 passed away on July 11 in New Jersey. Bill came to Dartmouth from Atlantic City (New Jersey) High School. At Dartmouth Bill was an international relations major, a brother of Tau Epsilon Phi, a member of Casque & Gauntlet and the Athletic Council, manager of the varsity soccer team, and president of the International Relations Club. After graduation he earned his J.D. at Yale Law School in 1957. Bill then served a judicial clerkship until 1959, when he entered private practice. He served as assistant corporation counsel for the City of Newark from 1962 to 1968, when he was appointed a municipal court judge in Newark. In 1970 Bill became corporation counsel for Newark serving until 1974, when he became business administrator of the city. In 1977 N.J. Gov. Brendan Byrne appointed Bill to the Superior Court of New Jersey, where he served until 1994. In 1994 President Bill Clinton appointed him to the U.S. District Court for New Jersey, where he served until 2005. He served as a senior advisor until his passing. Bill also served as a trustee of the Newark Museum and the New Jersey Symphony. He was president of the board of trustees of the Newark Boys Choir and on the advisory council of the National Urban Coalition. He is survived by children Peter and Claire.
