Thomas R. Torinus ’60

Thomas R. Torinus ’60 died January 8 in Egg Harbor, Wisconsin. At Dartmouth he majored in economics, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Gamma Delta, and the ski team and left with a Tuck degree in 1961. He was described by the local newspaper as a distinguished journalist, poet, spiritual director, and teacher. After college he was assistant to the general manager of the New York Daily News. He then returned to Wisconsin to work for the Post Corp. as a reporter, editorial page writer, editor, news director, and general manager of Channel 11 in Green Bay. There, he helped take the station from last to first in the marketplace. His Channel 11 accomplishments included successfully suing the Green Bay Packers to make their financial records available to the public and attacking air pollution in Green Bay. In Green Bay he married Mary Glenn Sharp. Tom and his two brothers bought the Menominee Herald-Leader in 1976, and he served as its president and editor for six years. After the company was sold in 1982, Tom embarked on a spiritual path that originated in childhood. He and Mary moved to Chicago and he studied at Loyola University, McCormick Theological Seminary, and the Institute for Spiritual Leadership, earning a master’s in theology and a master’s in pastoral counseling. He and Mary then moved to Door County, Wisconsin, where he served as a spiritual director. He is survived by two children, two grandchildren, and four siblings.
