Thomas Hull Cogbill ’74

Thomas Hull Cogbill ’74, M.D., of Cable, Wisconsin, died on December 31, 2022, from advanced prostate cancer. Tom came to Hanover from Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. At Dartmouth Tom was active in The Dartmouth and WDCR/WFRD and as an admissions tour guide. Tom was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, graduating with a biology major and then earning a bachelor’s in medical science from Dartmouth Medical School. He received his M.D. from the University of Colorado School of Medicine and completed his internship and surgery residency at the University of Colorado Medical Center. In 1982 Tom joined Gundersen Clinic in La Crosse, Wisconsin, as a general surgeon with a focus on vascular and trauma surgery and practiced there until 2017. Tom served as department of surgery chair, clinical professor of surgery for the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and program director of the general surgery residency with the Gundersen Medical Foundation. Tom was active in many medical societies and associations. He was especially interested in rural surgery and reducing disparities in rural healthcare. Being outdoors was one of the greatest passions of Tom’s life. He completed dozens of marathons, Birkebeiner Nordic ski races, and triathlons. He loved camping, mountain climbing and biking, alpine skiing, pickleball, sailing, and swimming. Tom is survived by his wife, Jan; children Christopher, Andrew, and Allison; six grandchildren; and siblings Anne Rose, Vicky, and Charles ’71.
