Thomas A. Hickey Jr. ’60

Thomas A. Hickey Jr. ’60 died May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. Tom leaves behind Patricia, his wife of 56 years; daughters Sara and Mary; grandchildren Jake, Tommy, Katie, Grace and Elizabeth; and siblings John, David, Phyllis and Marilyn. Born in Chicago on November 25, 1938, Tom was the eldest son of Ruth and Thomas Alanson Hickey. Growing up in Elgin, Tom attended Elgin High School, where he was class president. At Dartmouth he majored in English and was chosen Sachem Orator for the class of 1960. Tom graduated from John Marshall Law School in 1967. Tom’s career was devoted to banking, chiefly with First Midwest Bancorp in Illinois, where he was CEO, a senior vice president and director. In 1993 he retired from First Midwest to found Prairie Asset Management Inc. while owning several rural banks in Illinois. Tom was always an active member in his community, especially in economic development. The Thomas A. Hickey Drive in Joliet was named in honor of his contributions to that city. In retirement Tom and Patricia retired to Travelers Rest, South Carolina. His passing, caused by post-surgical complications to resolve cerebral bleeding, was marked by his many friends and family with a celebration of his life’s numerous contributions and noteworthy achievements.
