Theodore J. Cutler ’63

Theodore J. Cutler ’63 died at home in Sonoma, California, on December 6, 2021, of illnesses including dementia and Parkinson’s. He was born in Portland, Maine, and attended Deering High School, where he was cocaptain of the golf team. At Dartmouth Ted majored in history, was a brother of Pi Lambda Phi, and a member of the golf team. At a difficult point for Ted while at Dartmouth, the College supported him and enabled him to graduate, an important “helping hand” for which he was grateful. After Dartmouth Ted received an M.B.A. at Cal Berkeley in 1965, followed by a stint in the Air Force. Ted’s marketing career began at Procter & Gamble and then a brand manager position at Clorox. He then switched to Memorex in San Mateo, California, where he was president of the tape division and headed the legendary campaign with Ella Fitzgerald—“Is it live or is it Memorex?”—which set a high bar for advertising campaigns. He was a managing director at Marketing Corp. of America, followed by the presidency of the major appliance division of General Electric in Louisville, Kentucky. After a period with a startup, Bower’s Imaging in San Francisco, Ted finished his career with 15 years as executive vp of Warner Cable in Stamford, Connecticut. In 1980 Ted married Julia, who predeceased him in 1999. In 2002 he married Gemma, who survives him, and they moved to Sonoma from Connecticut in 2006 to be closer to family and friends. Ted’s son, Alexander, also survives.
