Stuart M. Paley ’51

Stuart M. Paley ’51 died at his home in New York City on April 22. He is survived by his wife, Naomi, and their two children and four grandchildren. Stuart was one of seven members of the class of ’51 who were graduates of Horace Mann School in the Bronx. As an undergraduate he was a member of Tau Epsilon Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. He and Naomi were married in the middle of his senior year and enjoyed living in Hanover while he attended his last semester at the Tuck School. Their very small apartment was a popular gathering place for friends. Stuart went on to earn a law degree from the Yale Law School and to serve two years in the U.S. Army as an enlisted man. Stuart founded a highly regarded investment advisory firm, Stuart M. Paley Inc., in New York City in 1975. Devoted clients and friends praised his ethical sensibility and integrity as well as his intellect, kindness, and sparkling wit. Among many interests he was a sophisticated collector of antique textiles as well as indigenous art and sculpture, much of which he and Naomi saw on site during their extensive travels. He also loved music, especially opera and jazz. In his younger days he played the piano; Gershwin was a special favorite. Stuart attributed his interest in music to a Dartmouth course, which he said opened his ears to music that was entirely new to him.
