Stephen Reveley Carley ’68

Stephen Reveley Carley ’68 died of Lewy body dementia on October 9, 2022, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born August 6, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, Steve and brother Michael were raised by their mother, Virginia. When the family relocated to New Orleans, Steve’s love of the New York Yankees led to a playground fist fight—because he was a “Yankee lover.” Steve came to Dartmouth from Metarie Country Day, bringing a love for New Orleans, Mardi Gras, and Otis Redding. He majored in history and reigned over the house pool table at Alpha Chi Alpha. Upon graduation Steve enlisted in the Army. Dubbed “The Professor” by his drill sergeant, Steve trained at the Monterey Language Institute, learned Arabic, and interpreted signals intelligence in Ethiopia. He earned a J.D. from University of Virginia, graduating third in his class, and met his future bride, Linde Hodson, in the elevator of a high rise in San Francisco where he practiced initially before relocating to Charlotte. A man of many hobbies (pool, hunting, backgammon, painting) and interests (history, politics, New Orleans music), Steve especially loved golf. He was a member of golf clubs in California and Carmel Country club in Charlotte, which held a special place in his heart. He served on the club’s board, won a championship, and sank a hole in one. Steve is survived by Linde; children Edward, Jack, and Virginia; grandchildren; and brother Michael.
