Stephen Ray Bryan ’66

Stephen Ray Bryan ’66 passed away with his family at his side on October 24, 2022, from an autoimmune disorder and kidney disease. Steve attended Highland High School in Salt Lake City, where he earned All-American and First Team All-State honors as an end in football. Recruited by top Division I programs, Steve chose Dartmouth. A biology major, Steve was a member of Sphinx and Beta House. He also was a key member of the undefeated 1965 Ivy Champion football team, earning Coaches and AP All-Ivy First Team and AP All-East honorable mention. Following Dartmouth Steve attended the University of Utah School of Medicine and completed his medical training with a neurology residency. During this time he married Jane Hansen, the sister of his best friend in high school, and they had sons Derek and Josh. In 1976 Steve and family moved to Montgomery, Alabama, to join the Alabama Neurological Clinic, where he remained for 35 years. In 2011 he took a solo neurologist position at Russell Hospital in Alexander City, Alabama, to be closer to his new full-time home on Lake Martin. Jane passed away in 2016, and he found comfort with his sons and grandchildren Brendan and Remi. Watching his grandchildren grow up was the greatest joy of his life. Steve had many interests outside of medicine, including fishing, boating, and golf. He enjoyed concerts, plays, and singing in the church choir. Easygoing and highly competent, Steve had a remarkable combination of athletic ability, intelligence, common sense, and decency.
