Stephen Morell Mullins ’54

Stephen Morell Mullins ’54 passed away on June 2 in Evanston, Illinois. Steve came to Dartmouth from New Trier (Illinois) High School, where he swam on the 1950 national championship high school team. At Dartmouth he was an economics major and a member of the swim team, where he was twice named an All-American. Steve earned his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan Business School in 1958 and began his business career in marketing with Commonwealth Edison. In 1962 Steve joined E.F. Hutton and Co. as an investment broker. In 1974 he cofounded Great Northern Financial Group, which grew into a major real estate investment company he sold in 1988 to continue as an individual real estate investor and developer. During more than 50 years in the real estate business he was involved in the operation of more than 17,000 apartment units and 2 million square feet of commercial real estate in 17 states. Steve was an active competitive swimmer throughout his life. As a participant in the U.S. Masters Swimming organization for 35 years, he achieved multiple state, national, and Pan American championships, culminating in a gold medal at the World Masters Championship in Budapest, Hungary, in 2017. Steve served the College as a president of his class, his local club, and the Alumni Council. He served on several Dartmouth capital campaign committees and was national chair of special gifts. Steve was the recipient of the Dartmouth Alumni Award. Steve is survived by his wife, Carol, and children Stephanie ’87, Elizabeth, and Rian ’93.
