Stephen M. Jacobstein ’63

Stephen M. Jacobstein ’63 died on August 31 after battling cancer for seven years. He was from Rochester, New York, and attended nearby Monroe High School. He was an Eagle Scout and his egg delivery route and berry-picking job funded his first year at college. At Dartmouth Steve majored in history and was active in the DOC and Glee Club and was a member of the ski patrol. He was a brother of Pi Lambda Pi and an active alumni interviewer and class agent. He obtained a J.D. at Cornell Law School in 1966 and served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserves. Steve became a partner at Kaman Berlove (later Kaman Berlove & Jacobstein), where he worked for 56 years until just before his death, for some years a senior partner. Some years ago, Steve moved from corporate and business law into divorce and family areas of practice. He enjoyed the drama and anecdotes that went along with the complex legal and financial issues so often involved in those cases. He was rewarded by helping many fractured lives through his holistic approach to their problems. He was active in the First Unitarian Church in Rochester, a frequent home for Jews who marry non-Jews. He was a leader of the senior high school youth group and active in other church ministries. After a painful divorce, Steve married Kay in 1997, who survives him along with his four children, Kay’s three children, and eight grandchildren from their blended families.
