Shawn O’Neal ’84

Shawn O’Neal ’84 passed away on August 16, 2024, in Taipei, Taiwan, after a three-year battle with cancer. Throughout his illness Shawn showed incredible mental strength and unwavering positivity. Known for his sense of humor, radiant energy, and kindness, Shawn dedicated himself to uplifting and caring for others, even in the face of his own struggles. Shawn was a gifted track and field athlete, ranked nationally in the 800-meter and 1,500-meter events. While competing at Dartmouth, he distinguished himself as one of the top runners in the country. In addition to participating in track and field and cross country, Shawn was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and Casque & Gauntlet. He was an Asian studies major and participated in the theater foreign study program. In 1990 Shawn and his wife, Ellen, embarked on a new chapter together in Taipei, where Shawn made a lasting impact as owner of the renowned Uncle Bubba’s Fried Chicken—a restaurant so beloved it gained media attention across Taiwan. He later dedicated many years to managing the food service department at Taipei American School, where he became a cornerstone of the school community. Shawn found great joy in bringing people together through his culinary talents. He also found time to give back to Dartmouth as one of the College’s admissions ambassadors from 2000 to 2024, acting as an alumni interviewer and district enrollment director for Taiwan. Shawn is survived by Ellen and children Brandon and Monica.
