Seen & Heard

A selection of must reads about Dartmouth alumni making news around the world.
Trevor Burgess ’94

Out and Proud

CNBC profiled Burgess, now the CEO of a flood insurance company, as part of its Make It series “Behind the Desk.” Burgess became the first openly gay CEO of a publicly traded bank after the one he founded, C1 Financial, Inc, went public in 2014.

Of his time at Dartmouth, Burgess says, "Late in my freshman year, I came out. I had been the president of my fraternity and ended up resigning and became president of the gay students' group."

He says his time at Morgan Stanley, where he worked during the 1990s, was "tough": "There were all sorts of crazy incidences of slurs and discrimination and clients telling crazy stories about hating gay people and hating people who have AIDS...It really helped me develop a very thick skin."
