Kakimoto published her first book, a story collection entitled Every Drop Is A Man’s Nightmare, on August 29.
Honolulu magazine reviewed the book ahead of publication, heaping high praise on the native Hawai‘ian author: “Kakimoto has taken the most familiar Hawai‘i cultural tropes, including geckos as returned ancestors, and exploded them into fresh shards of meaning and endless reflection.”
Reflecting on her creative process in an essay for LitHub this week, Kakimoto wrote: “Scan any bookshelf in a bookstore, do the smallest amount of author research, and you will find there are dozens of stories of Indigenous Hawaiian lives written by non-Indigenous writers. My choice to write this collection was also a move toward reclamation, to offer one kanaka maoli perspective among those of non kānaka.”
The American Booksellers Association picked the title as a Summer/Fall 2023 Indies Introduce selection.
